What is Whole30 Anyway?

Posted by Sarah Arel on

We have been offering Whole30 approved meals here at Cooked for a while, but why? and what does Whole30 mean exactly?

The Whole30 reset is designed to help people identify food sensitivities that they are unaware of. Many people suffer from digestion issues, or that general feeling of “not great” after eating a meal. Whole30 wants to help you figure out what foods could be causing you to feel that way.

We all know that certain foods are not great for us: trans-fats, saturated fats, sugar, refined grains…. But what if it is dairy that is making you gassy? what if your stomach really sucks at digesting beans? Could you actually be addicted to sugar? or maybe you are sensitive to gluten? Spend 30 days eliminating these ingredients from your diet and see how you feel at the end. Slowly add these items back in one by one to see if you notice any adverse health affects. Except maybe sugar- leave that for special occasions- you don’t need it.

As a nutritionist I believe in moderation. I love wine with dinner, and honestly cheese is one of my favorite foods ever. But wellness goes beyond green smoothies and cutting out sugar. Everyone is unique and some foods are going to work for me and my body that are not going to work for yours. Taking a month of your life to follow a Whole30 diet can help you to understand your body better, and to learn what foods can make you feel your best.

The Basics:

Whole30 eliminates:

  • Sugar
  • Alcohol
  • ALL grains (this means Whole30 is 100% gluten free)
  • Legumes (this means beans and peanuts)
  • Dairy (sorry, no cheese allowed)
  • Soy (no tofu, edamame, miso etc..)
  • MSG
  • Carrageenan
  • Sulfates

Yes, this is a lot of things. Which is why it can be a challenge for many people to follow the diet for a whole month (or longer!) and this is why we offer Whole30 meals at Cooked. We have a team of people here who are passionate about good food and nutrition. We have the time to make all of our dressings and sauces from scratch. We have the ability to fill our produce cooler with tons of different veggies and greens that we can prepare in unique and tasty ways to keep your meals exciting and delicious. Most importantly, we have a dishwasher to clean up after our messes.

Don’t beat yourself up if you have tried diets like this in the past and failed- honestly, it is a lot of work. But we are here to help this time.
